Doing It Right
Sizing, Testing and Permits
Gas piping is sized for the total load of every appliance on it and the length of the run, using sizing tables like those in the fuel gas chapter of the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC). An undersized line starves appliances when several run at once, which shows up as a tankless heater losing heat when the furnace fires. Adding one appliance to an existing system means checking the whole system's capacity, not just the new branch.
We pressure-test every new or repaired gas line before connecting appliances, then leak-check each connection. Flexible corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) is common in newer homes, and manufacturers require it to be bonded to the electrical system to reduce lightning damage risk.
Gas piping is licensed, permitted work in Idaho, inspected before it is put into service. Inside Nampa city limits the city issues the permit. Rural properties around Melba, Idaho and other areas without natural gas mains often run on propane, which uses the same careful approach with different regulator and supply details.
