Garbage Disposal Repair & Installation in Nampa, ID

Garbage disposal repair in Nampa, Idaho usually starts with one of four complaints: it hums but does not spin, it does nothing at all, it leaks under the sink, or it drains slowly and backs up into the other basin. Some of those you can fix in two minutes. Others mean the unit has reached the end of its life.

We repair jams, leaks and wiring issues, replace worn-out units and reconnect the dishwasher drain properly so it does not back up or leak.

What to Do Before You Call About a Disposal

Always switch the disposal off at the wall and, if you can, unplug it under the sink before touching anything. Never put a hand inside the grinding chamber.

  • Humming but not turning: switch off, then insert a hex key into the socket on the bottom center of the unit and work it back and forth to free the jam. Remove the object with tongs.
  • No sound at all: press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. If it trips again right away, stop.
  • Still dead: check the breaker and the wall switch outlet.
  • Slow drain: run cold water while grinding, and avoid grease, rice, pasta and fibrous peels, which pack the drain.
  • Leaking: put a pan under it and note where the water appears, top, side or bottom.
Leaks

Where the Leak Is Tells You the Fix

A disposal can leak from three places, and only one of them usually means replacement.

Leak locationCauseFix
Top, at the sink flangePlumber's putty or mount seal failedRemove, reseal and remount
Side, at the dishwasher or drain connectionLoose clamp or worn gasketTighten or replace the connection
Bottom, from the bodyInternal seals failed, housing corrodedReplace the unit

Water from the bottom of the unit is the one to take seriously. It cannot be repaired, and it will get worse, often soaking the cabinet floor.

Replacing a Disposal the Right Way

A new disposal mounts to the sink flange, connects to the drain trap and, if you have one, to the dishwasher drain hose. The dishwasher knockout plug inside a new unit's inlet has to be removed before connecting, a small step that causes a surprising number of dishwasher backups when missed.

The dishwasher drain also needs an air gap or a high loop so dirty sink water cannot siphon back into the dishwasher. The Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) addresses this connection, and it is worth getting right.

Horsepower matters less than people think for a typical household. A mid-size unit with a quality grinding chamber handles most kitchens. If the sink keeps clogging after a new disposal, the problem is in the line, and our kitchen drain clearing handles that.

Leak-test the flange and trap connections.

Homes on Septic Systems

Rural properties outside the city sewer system, common on acreage around Nampa, often use septic tanks. A disposal adds solids to the tank, which usually means pumping it more often.

If you are on septic, use the disposal sparingly, compost where you can and keep grease out entirely. Some manufacturers make septic-oriented models, though they do not change how much solid material reaches the tank.

What Disposal Repair and Replacement Cost Depends On

A jam or loose connection is a short visit. Replacement depends mostly on the unit you choose and whether the drain or electrical needs changes.

Insurance does not cover a worn-out disposal. Cabinet water damage from a sudden leak may be covered.

Garbage Disposal Questions

Many last around 8 to 15 years depending on use and build quality. A unit leaking from its body or jamming constantly is usually due for replacement.

Ice is fine in small amounts. Eggshells, coffee grounds, grease and fibrous peels contribute to drain clogs and are better in the trash or compost.

Food residue under the splash guard and in the chamber. Grind ice and a few citrus peels with cold water, and scrub the underside of the rubber guard.
